Power 100 list 2014: Mr. Number 1 – Tate’s Sir Nicholas Serota

This year’s number 1 of the ArtReview’s annual Power 100 list is Tate director Sir Nicholas Serota. For the art magazine this first place stands for the key role that Tate Modern plays in an increasingly global art world. The top three of the list is completed by the international dealers David Zwirner and Iwan Wirth. ArtReview on Tate and Serota:

‘Tate, helmed by Nicholas Serota since 1988, might not have the best modern and contemporary art collections in the world (MoMA and the Pompidou Centre would challenge for that), but the British institution – represented by the man who runs it – becomes the first such organisation to top this list as much for the way in which it so completely embodies the dominant Western contemporary art system as for what goes on inside the spaces of its galleries in London (Tate Modern and Tate Britain), St Ives and Liverpool. (…) Tate Modern remains the most visited modern and contemporary museum in the world.’
